MUMBAI: BBC and Radio Television Afghanistan (RTA) have joined forces to launch a new political debate and discussion show, Open Jirga.

The series, which is the first of its kind in Afghanistan, is presented by popular BBC journalist Daud Junbish.

It is produced by Radio Television Afghanistan (RTA) with the BBC?s service for Afghanistan in Pashto and Dari, and BBC Media Action, the BBC?s international development charity.

Recorded in Dari and Pashto, Open Jirga (jirga means ?assembly? in Afghan languages) has a broad reach. The show provides people from across Afghanistan?s diverse communities with a platform to share their opinions with national leaders on the country?s future.

BBC?s service for Afghanistan editor Lutfullah Latif said, ?Afghanistan is undergoing major transitions linked to the drawdown of international forces and the presidential elections in 2014. Audiences have a lot of questions to ask, and this series of debate shows will provide an opportunity to air their views, hopes and fears.?

?Open Jirga? launched on RTA on 10 December and on the BBC?s service for Afghanistan in Pashto and Dari.

The studio audience from across the country took part in an animated discussion in the first episode, which tackled both the impact of the military withdrawal in 2014 on Afghanistan?s future, and the capacity and strength of the country?s security services.

A panel responded to questions from the audience. The panel included the Minster of the Interior, the Chief of Staff for Operations at the Defence Ministry, a female MP, Shukria Barakzai, the former Afghan Intelligence Chief, and former Deputy Interior Minister.

One audience member from Kabul asked: "The country?s borders are open to Iran and Pakistan. When these modern weapons are taken away [in 2014], how can the Afghan people be confident that the national borders are secure?"

When Junbish started to wrap up the show, many in the audience stood up and called out: ?The debate has just begun!?

BBC Media Action?s Afghanistan country director Shirazuddin Siddiqi said, ?This programme is the result of a decade-long aspiration. It will play an important role in Afghanistan?s media landscape by bringing ordinary Afghans together with state officials.?

RTA deputy DG Jalal Mahmoodi said, ?Our country has reached a critical moment in its history. ?Open Jirga? provides our nation with the platform to debate and explore the choices we are faced with?.

Five more episodes tackling issues including the country?s economy will broadcast over the coming months.

In preparation for the debates, in-depth audience research was undertaken by BBC Media Action in seven provinces to ensure the programme?s focus on the issues that count to people across the country.

MUMBAI: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced that the last three days of the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier UAE 2012 will be shown live by ESPN Star Sports. This is the first time that there will be live broadcast of an ICC Development event online and on television to a global audience.

Six matches from 22-24 March will be shown live from the Dubai International Cricket Stadium online at www.espnstar.com/live. The ICC has also secured live television coverage of these games into key territories via ESPN Star Sports and its licensees around the globe. A full broadcast list will be circulated at a later date.

This will be the first time that an ICC Development event, featuring only the Associate and Affiliate Members, will be shown on a live global television broadcast.

The ICC said this represents a breakthrough to expose cricket outside the traditional Test playing countries and, aligned with the ICC?s Strategic Plan, is an important step in promoting cricket to become a bigger, better global game.

The ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier UAE 2012 is a 16-team global event that will be played in the UAE from 13-24 March. The top two sides will progress to the ICC World Twenty20 Sri Lanka 2012, to be staged in Colombo, Hambantota and Pallekele from 18 September to 7 October, where they will have the potential opportunity to face Australia, England, India and West Indies.

Among the six live matches that will be broadcast from the Dubai International Cricket Stadium are the first qualifying final, the preliminary final, the second qualifying final and the overall event final.

MUMBAI: Asian sports marketing, media and event management company World Sport Group (WSG) has appointed Ten Sports to air the 2011 South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Championship on Ten Action+.

All 15 matches of this seventh edition of the SAFF Championship which will be played at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium New Delhi from 2 - 11 December will be telecast live on Ten Action+.

Eight countries from the region: India, Bangladesh, Maldives, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Afghanistan will participate in this tournament.

Ten Sports CEO Atul Pande said, "We are delighted to broadcast the 2011 SAFF Championship. The championship will not only help in the development of football in the region but also in fostering goodwill among neighboring nations. Drawn in Group A alongside Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Bhutan, five-time winners and defending champions India will kick-off their campaign in the Saff Championship with a match against Afghanistan on 3 December. Pakistan is in Group B along with runners-up Maldives, Bangladesh and Nepal.

The top two teams from each group will advance to the semifinals, which will be held on 9 December, two days before the summit clash.

MUMBAI: Soccer?s governing body Fifa has secured TV rights deals worth $1.85 billion for the period 2015-2022.

Fifa has awarded the sales representation for selected territories in Asia to Infront Sports and Media following an
international tender process. The territories comprise India,
Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China PR, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Macau, Maldives, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.

The rights for the 2015 to 2022 period include the 2018 Fifa World Cup Russia and the 2022 Fifa World Cup Qatar, the Fifa Women?s World Cup Canada 2015 and the Fifa Women?s World Cup 2019, as well as other Fifa events.

Fifa?s executive committee has decided on further sales and
distribution of media rights for the same period in the following territories:

? Australia -- extending with SBS

? Canada -- rights awarded to Bell Media (CTV/TSN/RDS)

? Caribbean -- extending with IMC (SportsMax)
