CANNES: International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has announced Special award recipients for the 32nd International Emmy Awards.
The winners of three special awards, which will be presented at the 32nd International Emmy Awards on 22 November 2004 in New York City, are MTV International, Tele-München Group's managing director Dr Herbert Kloiber and veteran Australian channel Nine broadcaster Len Mauger.
While DR Kloiber will receive the International Emmy Directorate Award, MTV International will receive the International Emmy Founders Award for revolutionizing music on television and supporting the fight against HIV/AIDS around the world. Bill Roedy, President of MTV Networks International will accept the award on behalf of MTV.
Mauger will receive the Ted Cott Award.
The International Emmy Directorate Award is given to organizations or individuals in management, administration, engineering, news, programming, and/or international relations for their outstanding contributions, over a period of time, to the arts and sciences of international television.
Previous winners of this distinguished award include, among others, Greg Dkye, Akio Morita, Gustavo Cisneros, Silvio Berlusconi, Dr. Frank Stanton and Ted Turner.
DR Kloiber, also a chairman and majority shareholder of Tele-München Group (TMG) acquired TMG in 1977 and expanded the company's initial production operation into distribution, channel operation, and theatrical, video, and television distribution, controlling rights for the second largest television program and film library in Germany.
"Herbert Kloiber is an exceptional leader in the global television industry. His accomplishments personify the International Emmy Award that recognizes excellence in global television. The Academy is very pleased to honor his many contributions to the art and science of international television," said Academy president and president of Hearst Entertainment Bruce Paisner.
The International Emmy Founders Award will be given to MTV International. The award celebrates the accomplishments of an individual or a company whose work is recognized throughout the world embodying the vision of the founders of The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, crossing cultural boundaries to touch our common humanity and is primarily an award for creative achievement.
Previous winners of this award include, among others, HBO; Sir Howard Stringer; Film on Four from Channel 4 - UK; John Hendricks; Robert Halmi, Sr.; Bill Cosby; Jacques-Yves Cousteau; Sir David Attenborough; and Jim Henson.
"The Academy will be honored to present the 2004 International Emmy Founders Award to MTV International for revolutionizing music on television and supporting the fight against HIV/AIDS around the world. We are also honored that Bill Roedy will accept the award as we recognize his many contributions to both MTV and to the HIV/AIDS cause," said Paisner.
The Ted Cott Award will be presented to Len Mauger. The award is named after one of the founders of the Academy and is given to Board Members who have contributed significantly to the Academy. Previous winners of this award include, among others, Renato Pachetti, Roberto Marinho and Ralph Baruch.
Mauger is presently associated with the Nine Network Australia, a freeman of the City of London and a member of the Order of Australia. He was a consultant at Nine Network International in Australia from 1990-2002 after serving as its managing director from 1973 - 1990.
"We honor Len's commitment to global broadcasting through his work at Channel Nine and with the Academy. Over the years, Len has advanced the Academy's goals of sharing ideas, skills and programs among world's television industry. He is a good friend, mentor, and a professional colleague to many of us," said Academy chairman Fred Cohen.
