Viacom content blocked on Google TV

MUMBAI: US media conglomerate Viacom has become the latest network to block access to Google TV from streaming full episodes of its shows.

Google TV already faces blockages of shows by CBC, NBC, ABC and most recently Fox. All the networks are said to be worried that they could lose out on ad revenue as online advertising is cheaper than TV commercials.

A Viacom statement said, "We‘re blocking access to our full episode content from Google TV‘s Web browser. We continue to evaluate Google TV to identify opportunities where it may make sense to optimize our web content for the platform".

When Viacom channels like MTV, VH1 and Nickelodeon are accessed on a Google TV set top box in the US, viewers are greeted by a message that says "sorry, this content is unavailable for your device".
