Pirates… grosses $ 90 million in first weekend

MUMBAI: Disney‘s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides has had the biggest opening weekend in the year in the US and Canada when the film collected $90.1 million.

The film, the fourth film in the franchise, made an estimated $346.4 million worldwide, resulting in the fourth biggest opening of all time. Outside of North America, the film directed by Rob Marshall grossed $256.3 million in the first three days of its release.

The film‘s earnings saw it record the highest-grossing international opening of all time beating 2009‘s Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

However, the latest film in the franchise did fall short of the North American openings of the previous two films. While Dead Man‘s Chest took $135.6 million in 2006, At World‘s End grossed $114.7 millionin 2007. The first film in the franchise, The Curse of the Black Pearl, collected $46.6 milion in its first weekend in 2003.

On Stranger Tides beat raunchy comedy Bridesmaids in the US and Canada with the latter taking in $21 million in its second weekend.On the other hand, last week‘s number one film Thor fell down to the third position with it weekend takings of $15.5 million.
