Disney ties up with MultiChoice, launches channel in Africa

MUMBAI: Disney, in a deal with South African pay-TV company MultiChoice, has launched a new Disney channel in Africa.

More theatres are being built in Africa and Internet access is growing and improving in quality, according to Christine Service, who manages Disney operations in South Africa. She is also witness to improvements in the services free and pay television companies are offering along with an expansion of South African retailers.

A survey by accounting firm Ernst & Young has found that 68 per cent of the people there believed that Africa had become a more attractive place to do business in recent years.

Service revealed that Disney would bring more channels, live shows and digital products to Africa, but she said that an African Disney theme park was not yet on Disney’s agenda. Disney has three theme parks outside the US - in Paris, Tokyo and Hong Kong. Last month, it broke ground for a new hanghai park in China.

Disney also has its own television networks ESPN and ABC, Pixar Animation Studios and Marvel comics. "We look forward to the future and remain absolutely committed to continuing to invest in this market," Service said.
