DD and AIR not to be privatised - Bais

AHMEDNAGAR: Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, Ramesh Bais on Tuesday said that there were no plans to privatise either Doordarshan or All India Radio(AIR).
" With Doordarshan having gone digital on five of its channels, the rest 24 will follow suit. DD and AIR, are two organisations which have a social cause attached to them and their basic aim is not to make profits but to entertain and inform," Bais is quoted as saying in a UNI report.
The two national channels enjoy the highest TRPs with 92 per cent of the television audience watching DD and 65 per cent listening to AIR, claims Bais
Bais also criticized the 'Saas-Bahu' soaps currently on air on private television channels, for cultivating a wrong image of a woman. He pointed out that soaps portraying Indian women as victims of harassment and oppression at the hands of the men were affecting the country's image abroad .
Talking about the new trend of surrogate advertising by gutkha and alcohol-making companies, he said that strict action would be initiated against them.
