Indian TV show on Aids wins Unicef award

MUMBAI: Haath Se Haath Milaa, a TV show produced by BBC World Service Trust, Delhi, in partnership with Prasar Bharati and NACO (National Aids Control Organisation), has won the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association (CBA)/Unicef Award for Outstanding Local Children's Broadcasting, recently.
The award was presented at the British Council in New Delhi on Tuesday (28 October), before Prasar Bharati CEO KS Sarma, secretary-general of the CBA Elizabeth Smith, BBC World Service Trust-India director Colin Rogers, the senior producer of the series Sonia Chowdhry (creative director BBC WST India) and representatives of NACO among others.

The programme was selected against strong competition from a number of entries from across the Commonwealth. The CBA states that the award is "for a pioneering TV campaign on AIDS aimed at young people with challenged minds and changed behaviour".
In this first run of 40 episodes, Haath Se Haath Milaa set out with an over-riding mission to join the hands of 80 young people across north India in one unbroken human chain. It successfully completed this mission, challenging young people to reach out to their peers, spread information and understanding of HIV/AIDS and gain a better understanding of the life and times in which they live.
Production of a second series (of 26 episodes) of the show is currently underway. Screening dates have yet to be announced as a memorandum of understanding by the partners - BBC trust and NACO - is expected shortly.
