MUMBAI: Collecting $ 52.2 million from 8,063 locations in 57 markets, DreamWorks 3D animation film Shrek Forever After edged out the latest Twilight Saga taking the top-spot weekend title on the foreign theatrical circuit.
Opening on the foreign circuit on 29 May, Shrek was on the pursuit since then. Toady the foreign gross total stands at $292.5 million.
The latest instalment of the franchise opened in ten new markets and finished at top spot in each. Best of the newcomers was Mexico where the weekend tally was $8.4 million from 824 locations. In UK the film generated $7 million from 870 venues and lifted the total from the market to $37.7 million. The film also scored strongly in Germany, Brazil and France.
At the No. 2 spot was Summit International‘s The Twilight Saga: Eclipse that drew an estimated $42 million from 8,840 sites in 69 markets. The film‘s overseas total stands at an estimated $288 million.
Opening No. 1 in the all-important UK market -- and in the overall No. 5 spot on the weekend - was Warner‘s Inception starring Leonardo DiCaprio. In the UK, the film drew $8.6 million from 451 territorial screens or about 40 per cent of the combined gross action for the market‘s top five titles. It was the biggest debut in this market for any film of the actor.
Disney‘s The Sorcerer‘s Apprentice premiered in just 10 per cent of the overseas marketplace and grossed $8.5 million from 1,085 locations in 13 territories. Jerry Bruckheimer‘s action fantasy that co-stars Nicolas Cage and Jay Baruchel did very well in Russia drawing $5 million from 425 screens for nearly 60 per cent of the total weekend take.
