Film on slain lawyer Azmi on anvil

MUMBAI: The life of slain lawyer Shahid Azmi is poised to go celluloid with producers Anurag Kashyap and Sunil Bohra tying up to make a film on the slain lawyer.

The film is to be directed by Hansal Mehta.

The lawyer, who spent a part of his life behind bars and the rest of it fighting for the rights of captured militants, was shot dead in his office in February last year.

Talking about the film Bohra said, "I don‘t know much about the case or what exactly happened. I just heard the story from Hansal and liked it. It‘s a human, inspirational story."

The film that is already 50 per cent complete has Rajkumar Yadav, known for his roles in Love Sex Aur Dhokha and Ragini MMS), playing the lead as the slain lawyer.

Said Mehta, "The only way to make my voice count was to make an inspirational film. Fortunately, I found people like Sunil and Anurag who believed in what I did. I would say that this is the most honest film I‘m making since Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar."

The filmmakers are taking creative liberties and "fictionalising the story for cinematic purpose." It is said that the protagonist, played by Rajkumar Yadav, is a noble character.

"I am making the film in the format that I know best an exciting thriller," said Mehta.
