    MUMBAI: Former IPL chairman Lalit Modi has lost libel case against former New Zealand cricketer Chris Cairns and as a consequence has to pay : ?90,000 in damages, according to to a London High Court order.

    Modi will now have to pay up a part of the damages within the next 28 days and has until 20 April to file an appeal. The court also refused to entertain his plea for a stay on the damages.

    Cairns, who was captain of Chandigarh Lions in the now defunct Indian Cricket League, had his contract terminated in October 2008, on allegations of breach of terms of his contract by failing to disclose an ankle injury.

    As IPL chairman Modi had alleged that Cairns was involved in match fixing while justifying the decision to keep Cairns out of the league following which the cricketer sued Modi.

    Cairns contended that the match-fixing allegation put a strain on his marriage as well.

    MUMBAI: Cricket South Africa (CSA) will investigate claims that 200 million rands paid to it by the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2009 were not audited.That year the event was shifted to South Africa from here due to the elections.

    The IPL funds controversy saw CSA CEO Gerald Majola suspended pending disciplinary action and investigation of possible criminal charges by the National Prosecuting Authority after almost two years of wrangling within the body over the issue.

    Acting CSA president Willie Basson has been quoted in reports saying that the board had noted the comments by former CSA president Mtutuzeli Nyoka that the account into which IPL funds were paid were not audited.

    MUMBAI: IPL franchise Kings XI Punjab has announced the appointment of Adam Gilchrist as the Captain-cum-Coach for the fifth season scheduled to start on 4 April.

    Gilchrist will bear the additional responsibility in his new role of mentoring as well as leading the team, both on and off the field.

    Kings XI Punjab COO Col Arvinder Singh said, ?Adam is a natural leader involved in all aspects of running a successful campaign in the IPL. Hence, this is only a natural progression of his increased role within the franchisee. Appointing him as a coach-captain gives us an added advantage as he shall also be fully involved in all cricketing activities of the franchise outside of the IPL Season and hence have a major role in shaping the future of Kings XI Punjab team in the years to come."

    Gilchrist will be assisted by assistant coach Vikram Rathore, physiotherapist Patrick Farhart, fielding coach Mike Young and bowling coach Joseph Henry Dawes.
