  • Catch a 2 hours special episode of Inside the Actors Studio with Martin Scorsese in conversation with James Lipton this Sunday at 7:00 pm on PIX!

Submitted by ITV Production on Apr 27, 2007

MUMBAI: The most renowned filmmaker of his era, Martin Scorsese virtually defined the state of modern American cinema during the 1970s and ‘80s.A consummate storyteller and visual stylist who lives and breathes movies, he won fame translating his passion and energy into a brand of filmmaking that crackled with kinetic excitement.

Working well outside of the mainstream, Scorsese nevertheless emerged in the 1970s as a towering figure throughout the industry, achieving the kind of fame and universal recognition typically reserved for more commercially successful talents. His work addresses issues and themes such as Italian-American identity, Roman Catholic concepts of guilt and redemption, machismo, and the violence endemic in American society. The benchmarks for the Scorsese style are - New York settings, loners struggling with inner demons, pointed-shoes rock-meets-opera soundtracks and unrelenting cathartic violence. His lead characters are often sociopathic or want to be accepted in society. He often casts Robert De Niro, Harvey Keitel, Joe Pesci and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Some Interesting Trivia on Martin Scorsese

    * Martin Scorsese wanted to be a priest before he became a film director.

    * He suffered from severe asthma, and as a result was blocked from participating in sports and other common childhood activities. Consequently, Scorsese sought refuge in area movie houses, quickly becoming obsessed with the cinema, particularly in the work of Michael Powell.

    * Martin Scorsese has a small acting role in many of his films.

    * While serving as a teacher at New York University film school he taught legendary film director Spike Lee and Oliver Stone.

    * Martin Scorsese directed Michael Jackson‘s music video Bad.

    * Martin Scorsese is 5‘4" tall.

    * His favourite movie is Citizen Kane Directed by Orson Welles.

    * Martin Scorsese says Robert De Niro is his favourite actor.

    * Martin Scorsese won the Academy Award for Best Direction for his film ‘The Departed‘ in 2007, after previously being nominated 7 times in the category.

Some Quotable Quotes by Martin Scorsese

Martin Scorsese On his style of filmmaking: If I continue to make films about New York, they will probably be set in the past. The ‘new‘ New York I don‘t know much about. It‘s not that I‘m against contemporary film. I‘m open to it in general, but I find the new colours of the city, the new Times Square, kind of shocking. I guess I‘m stuck in a time warp.

Martin Scorsese on Violence: It seems to me that any sensible person must see that violence does not change the world and if it does, then only temporarily. .
